APPEARANCE
As far as first impressions go, Torrent probably looks like a bulky cat. While it is true that, as a cave-guard, he is well muscled in order to defend the Tribe’s territory at the cost of his life, he is not an overly brawny cat. In fact, he is almost as lithe as any prey-hunter if not as fast. The reason he looks so large is his long-haired pelt. His thick fur gives him extra protection against the claws and teeth of enemies, but it does make him fairly uncomfortable in the warmer season, and it causes him to shirk from water a bit more than his other Tribe-mates.
The easiest way to describe the cave-guard’s fur color is grey. That is its predominant shade; it’s not much of a deep blue-grey but is slightly lighter colored. Along his sides and his tail his coat is tinged with some tan. This can sometimes give it a bit of a dirty appearance. The most distinct feature of his pelt is the white splash on his front. It engulfs almost his entire chest, reaching from his chin into a stripe down his throat. His forepaws are also white.
Other than the obvious, Torrent has a few unique features. One of these is the color of his eyes, as everyone’s eyes are at least a subtly different shade. His are a mend of green, from olive green in some light to a pale sea green in other light. His soft nose is black and is almost perfectly heart-shaped. Another distinct marking is a scar along the underside of his jaw.

PERSONALITY
Anyone who first meets Torrent may come to the untrue conclusion that he is the dark, silent loner type of cat. The reason is that he often happens to be sitting thoughtfully alone and tends to keep these thoughts to himself. He is in fact extremely tolerant of others if they choose to speak to him. Like the usual Tribe cat, he likes company, but he doesn’t go out of his way to find company and rarely starts conversations unless he needs to. Though he often wears a thoughtful frown or is expressionless, it’s fairly easy to get a smile to grace his face.
The cave-guard may usually be gentle, but if he’s in one of his bad moods that all cats have, he can be quite the pessimist. In hard times he’ll bring up things that only dishearten the others Tribe cats. Even if he’ll feel guilty afterward for bringing everyone else’s hopes down, he sticks closely to his words despite any punishments that might come from them. One reason for this is that he tends to be a bit tongue-tied, making it hard for him to ever voice a change of mind.
As far as fighting goes, as a cave-guard it is his duty to do so. In battle, he is more of a tank than much else; he might not have lightning-fast reflexes, but his thick coat makes it hard to score dire hits on him. He uses intimidation and his apparent size to an advantage. If pitted against a faster opponent, his stamina wears down a lot more quickly, and his frustration can cause him to make a to-be’s mistakes.
Despite the death of Rush of a Snowy Gale, a she-cat that he had loved, Torrent is not at all depressed around couples or other females. He acts as if he had never had a mate before and can often simply be awkward around those he likes. He is a bit shallow and foolishly pursues even the mean-spirited beautiful she-cats, but with time he’ll pay more attention to their personalities and make the right decision in whether to give up or continue seeking a relationship.
HISTORY
It was early during the rainy season when the Tribe kit-mother Dapples on Forest Shadows made her way through their territory and curled up near the Cliff Edge. She had always found it as somewhere peaceful to think, though most cats though that she was insane for staying near the edge where no one else dared to go. She kept an eye around her like any good cave-guard, but as she lay there, her kittens started to come. Making her way with difficulty toward the caves, she ended up collapsing just in sight of them and birthing the kits there.
One was a white runt she named Cloud Floating Past Sun who quickly passed away, and the other was a grey and white tom called Torrent of Moonlit Ocean. Dapples knew that Cloud’s early death had been caused by the circumstances of birth as well as his already undeveloped size. Her mate, Tear from Red Thorn, was a prey-hunter who had happened to come across a very irritated dog fox on one of his hunting trips. He had died due to his own foolishness, but she usually glorified him as one of the bravest in his rank.
Torrent’s kithood was uneventful for several moons. He did the normal things—snuck off to explore, wreaked havoc with his nursery mates—until he came of age and became a to-be under the young female cave-guard, Rush of a Snowy Gale.
Torrent worked for moons trying to prove himself worthy to advance in ranking. Even while he was training, his friends noticed that he was becoming quite the ladies’ tom (or at least attempting to) and often poked fun at his advances on almost every she-cat in the Tribe. But as half of his mind was on the game of love, the other half became less devoted to training. Rush understood he would be distracted—she had been a to-be less than five or six moons before—and confronted him, saying that he’d never become a cave-guard if he couldn’t focus. Distraught and not wanting to embarrass himself explaining, the tomcat promptly ran off. His mentor ran after him, and the two talked things out rather jokingly, like a couple of friends. This made Torrent realize that he was closer to the beautiful tabby than he originally thought.
Torrent was hanging out with cave-mates when Rush and a group of other cave-guards thundered past him. He chased down the group, who were reinforcing a few prey-hunters from a predator attack. In the battle, he watched in horror as cats he knew were struck down. His wail of grief accidentally also drew the attention of his mentor, which caused her to get a cut down her shoulder.
The Tribe cats managed to escape after chasing the animals off their territory, and they returned back to the caves. Though he was troubled by the events, he couldn’t save himself from Rush’s rage. “Why did you leave the camp?” she snarled, looking angrier than he’d ever seen her before. He managed to stammer a retort, frustrated at her, by saying that he was able to take care of himself. The argument became so heated that the Healer had to ask them to leave the caves.
As the moon peered over the horizon, Torrent stormed into a bush and curled up there, glaring across at his mentor, who looked more shaken than angry now. “Why do you care what I do?” he snapped, but it was obviously the wrong thing to say. Appearing upset, the young cave-guard managed to admit that she cared a lot about him… More than a mentor would a to-be; more like a she-cat would care for a tom. Touched, Torrent silently moved toward her and began grooming her fur. The two forgave each other and, as the moon reached its zenith, they scurried back to the caves to honor those that were lost from the Tribe.
The next few moons passed by shakily, both to-be and mentor distracted by their feelings for each other, but eventually the grey tomcat became a full-fledged cave-guard. After the ceremony, he proudly drew Rush aside and asked if she would be his mate. Elated, she agreed, and in the next season she was almost hinting about the possibility of having kits. However, Torrent was a bit unnerved by the thought of them. She grew disheartened and attempted to explain that he had to have no part in their lives. “I don’t want copies running around my paws…” he growled. “And…besides, they’ll have no one to look up to. I’m as much of a coward and idiot as my father was.”
Rush looked extremely hurt and stalked off, muttering that she was proud of him. He asked despairingly where she was going, and she looked slightly sadder, saying that she was just taking a patrol with one of her prey-hunter friends. It was weeks later when she went missing and was proclaimed dead after a few scouts had found her body crushed at the drop at the Cliff Edge. Torrent grieved hard for his dead mate, but he made promises that he wouldn’t let one death in many ruin his life forever. He thinks of her from time to time, but Torrent is one cat who is able to focus on the present.
